In your opinion was Andreas Hofer a hero or was he just naive? Yes, it is possible to be naive and still be a hero. No doubt about that. I'm sure he was... We are looking back from a certain distance. He was surely swept away by his own enthusiasm. I think that is an essential aspect. It is possible that he liked the sound of his own voice. But that made him enthusiastic; he became inspired by his own words. Certainly, he had charisma. Otherwise people wouldn't have listened to him. ... He appears to have been alone but of course there were others who fought with him. I think that's often overlooked. It wasn't Andreas Hofer alone but also Haspinger and all the others who supported the idea. They probably made sure he didn't give up in many situations. He could ? he had to demonstrate to them constantly that he was the boss. That's clear. His his style of governing was everything but perfect. It shocked the city dwellers or the Innsbruckers deeply. That was very obvious. But it is inexplicable why the French had Andreas Hofer executed. He was so far away from Tyrol. If he had been executed in Tyrol you could say it was done as an example to keep the populace down. But it is inexplicable how this happened so far away, in Mantua. Today we know that it strengthened the internal defences.
